The Sudanese masses are drunk with the belief of omnipotence and the certainty of the success of the Islamic state. Their conception of the watan (nation) is one of boundless greatness and splendor, separated from reality by a boundless idealism, a being that is wished into existence rather than reality accepted. Sudan is in shambles, but the nation is still mighty and strong; so goes the conundrum. The flag, the national anthem, the 1.8 million square kilometers, these symbols of greatness negate the truth of the reality of the situation.
The situation is thus: Sudan has no proper healthcare system, there are electricity shortages, there are spikes in the prices of daily commodities, Fashaqa has been taken by Ethiopia and Halaayib by Egypt and there is no hope of their return to the Sudan. The sovereignty of Sudan is violated by Israel and the Rapid Support Forces, who supposedly an auxiliary to the military are terrorizing the people from Darfur to Khartoum.
To say that Sudan isn't all that great, that it is a weak, corrupt poor third-world shithole is too painful for the average Sudanese to utter, so the average Sudanese has to invent a narrative of might and splendor of the true spirit of the Sudan, as opposed to its decaying body. This has created megalomania and hubris in the average Sudanese, who vicariously through the watan puts down prosperous countries like Kuwait just because a Kuwaiti media woman pointed out a fact about Sudan.
This megalomania is a sledgehammer that is swung at the mighty and the weak, anyone who dares to utter anything that contradicts the greatness of the watan. Asaad Ali Hassan talked about "cutting the tongue of anyone who assails the Sudan," as though the Sudan were something sacred and worshipped. Alas, the nation is something sacred in itself, worshipped by constant veneration and remembrance. Not to gloat, but the Sudanese has two gods: Allah and the watan.
The indolent, uncreative and dull Sudanese, who has no proper achievement to brag about, but makes artificial historical achievement and lives in the past and brags about it every day, is an amusing study in the depths of human decadence and rot. His habits are primitive, and he refuses to modernize, taking only the technology and foregoing the manners and behavior. What lies in store for him in the future? Only time will tell, and I am overall pessimistic about his future. Let's hope he suffers.
